500,000 cheer Japan's Olympic medalists in Ginza parade
Sports Aug. 20, 2012 - 04:45PM JST ( 29 )
TOKYO —
A crowd estimated at 500,000 screamed, cheered and snapped photos as Japan’s Olympic medalists paraded through Ginza on Monday.
In all, 71 medalists rode in two open cars and five open double-decker buses in the parade that began at 11 a.m.
Members of the silver-medal winning women’s soccer team, judo, wrestling, track and field, volleyball and table tennis stars were among the Olympians wearing red jackets. All-around male gymnastics champion Kohei Uchimura showed off his gold medal with a big smile as he waved to the throngs lining the route.
The 38 medals won at the London games were the most ever by a Japanese Olympic team.
While only seven of those were gold, the athletes’ performance was an encouragement to many in this country struggling to overcome years of weak economic growth and last year’s devastating earthquake and tsunami that set off a nuclear crisis.
“They boosted our spirits,” said Akiko Ina, who came to the parade with her 7-year-old daughter Kanare, and had a Japanese flag emblazoned on one cheek and the numeral 15 for her favorite female football player on the other.
Japan has been struggling to recover from a devastating earthquake and tsunami last March that set off a nuclear crisis.
